Sashco Capture vs Transformation Stain


When protecting your log home, sashco is generally the preferred brand of stain. Sashco has so many great products, that it can be confusing as to which ones you need for your project. In this article we will compare sashco’s two most popular stains for log homes; Sashco Capture and Sashco Transformation Log & Timber. Sashco Capture should only be used over other water based stains, while Transformation Log & Timber stain can be used over all types of stains. Both stains are great for new builds.

What Type Of Stains Are They?

Transformation Log and Timber is an Oil-Based stain. Since it is an oil-based stain, this means that you will not need a clear coat first and that it can be used over most other stains with proper prepping. Like most oil-based stains, Transformation Log and Timber slightly penetrates the wood.

Capture Log Stain is a water-based surface stain. As with most water stains, Capture requires a clear coat, which Sashco also sells called Cascade. Water-stains are only able to be used over other water stains.

How many coats are required?

2 Coats are required for Transformation Log & Timber.

Sashco Capture log stain requires 2 coats of capture and 1 coat of Cascade.

Clean-Up requirements.

Since Transformation Log & Timber is an oil-based stain, you will need mineral spirits to clean it up.

One benefit of being water-based is that it cleans-up with water fairly easily. 

Maintenance requirements.

Gentle power wash and re-coat ever 2-5 years.

Gentle power wash and re-coat of Cascade every 2-5 years.

Transformation Log and Timber is a truly excellent oil-based stain that really accentuates every detail of the logs. It is great for new builds and will not require an additional clear coat. If you are restoring a log home and you are unsure what is already on it; Transformation Log & Timber is able to go over all kinds of stains. The mixture of oils offer added protection to the wood, ensuring your cabin will last a very long time. The only true disadvantage is that Transformation Log & Timber is not for the interior.

Sashco Capture Log Stain Overview.

Capture is an environmentally friendly water-based stain designed for durability. Capture log stain does not peel and is able to flex with log movement. It is also made without harsh chemicals and easily cleaned-up with water. Capture is also able to be used on both the exterior and interior. Perhaps the best part is the simple maintenance with Cascade Clear Coat. For maintenance, simply wash and then add Cascade clear coat. If you are looking for an eco-friendly, low maintenance stain; then Capture is your stain. The only true disadvantages are that you cannot use this stain over other stains that are not water-based and that you will require 3 coats in the beginning; 2 Capture and 1 Cascade.

Which stain is best?

Both of these stains are great for different scenarios. The important questions to ask when searching for stain are: Which stain is currently on the logs? Transformation Log & Timber can be used on top of all stains. Capture can only be used over water-based stains. Do you want to use the same stain on the outside as the inside? Sashco Capture is able to be used on both the exterior and the interior of the cabin. Transformation can only be used on the exterior. Do you want an environmentally friendly stain? While Transformation is made with the friendly ingredients, Capture is water-based and very friendly to the environment.
